I don't think I'm completely insane yet, but I'm working on it, hence this break to write my post for this weekend. :)
Today was the first day seeing snow here! It was just a few light flakes, but still...snow before Thanksgiving???? What is that about? I guess when you're from the Willamette Valley, any snow seems fairly novel.
We read Tchaikovsky 5 today in SLSYO rehearsal. AMAZING. You all need to go listen to that symphony if you haven't heard it before. I love Tchaikovsky. Apparently, this piece is linked thematically to his fourth symphony, which is about fate. This fifth symphony is about providence, and it is a little bit happier, or at least less despairing, take on fate and the future. Some of those runs and things in it are brutal, though! Time to practice some more. :) For one of our concerts this season, we're playing Elgar's Enigma Variations, which I decided to wikipedia. I'm really excited to play it now! I listened to it, and besides being a really cool piece, each of the 14 variations in the piece represents one of his friends! How neat is that? I think if I were a composer, I would like to write something similar representing the people in my life. :)
I actually don't have much to tell you all about this week. It's mostly been end of term sorts of things...finishing papers, practicing, tests....A lot of things are due the week after Thanksgiving break, which I think is fairly cruel. I'm trying to get them mostly finished before break hits so that it will actually be a break! :) Hmmmmm, what else? I'm playing in a small ensemble to accompany the choir concert on Tuesday, which is pretty fun. Rebekah is having trouble with her roomates, so she has proposed that we room together next semester. It would be crazy fun, but room changes unfortunately cost money, so we'll see whether or not that will be possible. I need to get a job next semester, so I've been periodically checking career services to see what on-campus listings they have.
Alright....it's back to the grindstone. Sorry about the lack of things to tell you all.
Stay safe, make good choices, and call me if you need anything. ;)
Love,
Maren

Can't wait to see you...only 7 more days! I'm glad you're doing all your homework now!
Love you,
Mom
Love the pic. So you. Positively transcendental.
You so crazy!
I've loved you being home this week, even if we didn't get to spend as much time together as I would have hoped. Sigh...you're just too popular! Well, Christmas is coming. We'll hope for more visits then.
Listened to Tchaikovsky 5 - whoa, that's going to be fun!
Love you,
Aunt Sue
Just listened to Tchaikovsky 4 on Youtube. I get what you mean about fate and despair. There's a section in the middle that's very peaceful, and I start to love it and feel calm. Then it's like a painful or desperate thought comes into his mind, and he tries to let it go, but his mind grows more and more obsessed until he's in an agonized frenzy. Yikes! Glad you're playing the 5th and not the 4th! Brilliant and beautiful but also painful. I don't find the 5th painful just tremendously energetic. I require another review or two, I think. I wish I could hear you play it with SLSYO!
